Work, what is it?

One of the outcomes of my coaching (yes, I know I keep nagging about this coaching thing, but it was/is a huge thing for me) has left me with an alternative, or wider, view of work.

In the society I’m part of, work is many times equal to employment in which a monetary compensation is provided. I meet the same definition a self-employed, work is only viewed as work if/when I’m able to bill someone for the value (or more commonly viewed, the production result I achieve), hence if the work is not billable, I’m not working (and not working is the absolute lowest you can come in our society, not only are you poor but you are also lazy).

With my new view, work is not equal to something that generates payment, it’s more what keeps me busy. Busy in the sense that it provides me value today and perhaps value to someone else tomorrow and who knows, maybe that value will generate me monetary compensation long after tomorrow.

I will embrace this new (for me) perspective as it provides me a dimension of freedom, creativity and value.
