My life is really filled with social media at the moment. I am working with it, I am doing it (here, FB, LinkedIn, Twitter (the last one there might be an exaggeration, I have an account, that is all).
In other words, I am interested in it. Not so much (or at all) from a technical point of view but from a communication and social behaviour point of view .
A while back we could read in the Swedish press that an employee (or were they two) at staffing company working at Volvo was fired (from Volvo), since one (or both) said something negative about the employer (=Volvo). According to the press one had expressed positive viewpoints about the company in previous posts. Question: Why was he not promoted then?
I wonder where the boundary to loyalty to your employer (= contract of employment) and the freedom of speech goes? Am I nolonger allowed to express my viewpoints about the food I ate in the staff canteen, overall management or that I just had a bad at work? Where will the limit go?
Are cooperations (since apparently some of them have a hard time comping the social media impact) the future dictators?
When talking about a company we are talking abut a non physical item, something that is not able to feel/express emotions. Can I hurt it? NO. I might hurt it’s reputation. But who said that my words is the truth?
I would say that the problem (for our cooperations) is not the expressed viewpoint, it is the media phenomenon. When I share my viewpoints over lunch they won’t reach more than to my company around the table (and maybe the eavesdropping neighbour). But the pace is slow. It is when the channel can make my view point reach millions within a second. In other words, my viewpoint is only worth listen to if the audience is big enough, because then it/I becomes powerful…
So to all cooperations out there, when you realize that you can’t control social medias or freedom of speech. Get in line, be honest, obey existing regulations and find your morals.
